Draft and moisture are not good for animals. Therefore avoid these situations.

Temperature regulation is not yet fully developed in young calves. This makes it more difficult for them to keep warm. Prevent the calves from lying in a moist and/or drafty environment. Draft and moisture often result in large temperature fluctuations in the young calf.

A fresh calf shed is no problem, as long as the calves' living environment is dry and wind-free.

A layer of sawdust as bedding with a thick layer of straw in the calf hutches on top can prevent a lot of suffering. If you can still see the legs of a lying calf, your straw bed is not thick enough, it is better to add extra straw.

Personally, I am in favor of a calf blanket or a calf body warmer for calves in the spring and autumn. But you have to use them correctly.

Before using the calf blanket or body warmer on the calf, the animal must be thoroughly dry. Otherwise it will be counterproductive!

The optimal comfort zone for a calf is at an ambient temperature of 15 ° C. If the calf is not dry, the calf will get cold and will burn more energy to keep warm. In addition to vitality, this also costs growth and increases the risk of stress and respiratory diseases.

Depending on the circumstances, a calf blanket or a calf body warmer can be used for a few days up to four weeks. A clean calf blanket or a clean calf body warmer for every newly born calf speaks for itself.
